The Basics of a Return Loss Bridge. In simple terms, the return loss bridge is a device used to measure RF power reflected from a load or device under test (DUT) when power is sourced to the device through the RLB. The return loss bridge has 3 ports. An RF signal generator is applied to the input port.

What is acceptable return loss?

Different systems utilize different acceptable return loss limits, but 15 dB or better is a standard system limit for antenna systems and cable. In an ideal scenario or a perfect system, the return loss equals infinity since there is no reflection.

What is return loss in directional coupler?

VSWR or Return Loss is caused by mismatches and discontinuities within the circuits of directional couplers. A mismatch on either port 1 (Input port) or port 4 (Terminated Port) will reduce directivity by an amount equal to return loss (in dB) of the mismatch. This permits measurement of Return Loss.

Keeping the return loss below -13 dB means the transmitted signal will not be affected by reflected signals.
