Thermographic imaging

Thermography measures surface temperatures by using infrared video and still cameras. These tools see light that is in the heat spectrum. Images on the video or film record the temperature variations of the building's skin, ranging from white for warm regions to black for cooler areas.

How is a thermographic image taken?

Thermal images are captured via thermographic cameras, which are devices capable of sensing this radiation in the form of infrared light. A thermal image allows us to remotely sense the temperature of an object or at least accurately tell its temperature relative to its environment.

What are thermographic cameras used for?

A thermal imaging camera (colloquially known as a TIC) is a type of the thermographic camera used in firefighting. By rendering infrared radiation as visible light, such cameras allow firefighters to see areas of heat through smoke, darkness, or heat-permeable barriers.

What disease can be diagnosed with thermography?

Thermography is a test that uses an infrared camera to detect heat patterns and blood flow in body tissues. Digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) is the type of thermography that's used to diagnose breast cancer. DITI reveals temperature differences on the surface of the breasts to diagnose breast cancer.

How reliable is thermography?

Sensitivity, %Accuracy, %

Thermography81.669.7
Thermography + ice test92.867.35

Is thermography as good as a mammogram?

Thermography has not been shown to be effective as a standalone test for either breast cancer screening or diagnosis in detecting early stage breast cancer. Mammography is still the most effective primary screening method for detecting breast cancer in its early, most treatable stages.

Is infrared thermography expensive?

While there are many advantages to using infrared thermography, it's always a good idea to be aware of some of the disadvantages: Infrared equipment is fairly expensive.

How much does thermal imaging cost?

The average cost of an infrared thermal imaging inspection is $350. Prices vary from around $150 to $650, depending on various factors. These include whether it's an add-on service to a traditional home inspection or a separate callout, the size and condition of your home, and the focus of the report.

Can thermal imaging see through walls?

Pest control companies might use it to find termite activity. Can thermal imaging see through walls? No, it can detect heat from the wall near the surface that there is an issue, but not what is behind the wall. However, if there is something that is causing a difference in temperature in the wall, it will pick it up.

Can thermal imaging see underground?

In some cases, images of underground features in archaeological sites are easily detected with the help of a thermal camera.

Can infrared camera see through clothing?

Because infrared light passes through certain materials in a way visible light doesn't, these materials appear transparent when viewed through an infrared camera. In the demonstration embedded below, visible light doesn't pass through the black t-shirt but infrared light does, revealing the iPhone image.

How far can thermal cameras see?

Depending on the camera configuration chosen it may be possible to detect humans beyond 15 km distance, ground vehicles or small boats beyond 20 km, larger ships or vessels and aircraft beyond 30 km.

How do I prepare for the thermography?

4 Hours Prior:

  1. Avoid hot showers or shaving.
  2. Avoid physical therapy or exercise.
  3. No coffee, tea, soda, or other beverages containing caffeine. No alcoholic beverages.
  4. Do not smoke cigarettes or use any product which contains nicotine.
  5. Women- do not wear a bra for the 4 hours leading up to the exam.

What can full body thermography detect?

Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI or Thermography) is used for detecting muscular/skeletal, vascular and nervous system irregularities, compensatory issues, stroke and inflammation screening, monitoring injury or chronic disease and much more.

Can thermography detect blood clots?

Early detection of DVT is critical to prevent a pulmonary embolism. However, most conventional methods for diagnosing DVT are functionally limited and complicated. Thermography is an effective screening tool for DVT due to its convenience, rapid response, and high sensitivity.

What cancers can thermography detect?

Thermography is the ideal method of early detection of cancer, especially Breast cancer. Thermography detects temperature patterns associated with the blood flow which feeds cancer cells, or with the blood flow associated with inflammation. Inflammation will always precede symptoms of a disease or abnormality.

Do insurance companies cover thermography?

Is Thermography covered by insurance? Some insurance companies cover thermography screenings, but most do not. Payment is due at the time of service. We have found that some companies will reimburse or give a partial reimbursement and are happy to provide an invoice for you to submit to your insurance company.

Can thermography detect nerve damage?

Nerve damage shows up on a thermogram as a cool area in the nerve tracts coming from the spine. Causes of nerve damage could be disc herniation or spinal nerve root compression. Thermography has even been used to document the permanency of a spinal injury.

Does insurance cover breast thermography?

Medical insurance often does not cover the cost of thermography, whereas it usually covers regular mammogram screening.

Can thermography detect tumors?

Thermography does not detect cancer in its early stages “Some research has shown that thermography may be able to detect big, advanced cancers,” Cohen says. “Unfortunately, detecting large, later-stage cancers is not as beneficial. You're not changing outcomes by detecting advanced cancer.
